Police in Ohio are shocked after a convicted inmate jumped to death after his court hearing.

STEUBENVILLE, OH (KTRK) -- Police in Ohio are shocked after a convicted inmate jumped to death after his court hearing.

It happened Friday after a judge handed 42-year-old Jason Binkiewicz a 13-year prison sentence. Binkiewicz was convicted of attempted murder and felony assault after shooting a man in the face last year.

The judge read her final remarks, laying out the details of Binkiewicz's criminal past.

When a deputy started to escort Binkiewicz out of the courtroom, he managed to jump to his death from the third floor courtroom -- a fall of approximately 100 feet.

"As soon as Binkiewicz started running, Deputy Price he was on him quick enough when he reached out, he had his shirt. It wasn't good enough, and if he held on to the shirt, most likely Deputy Price would have gone over with him," Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla told WTOV-TV.
