Man dead after falling down manhole in Humble

HUMBLE (KTRK) -- A man is dead after falling down a 50-foot deep manhole Saturday afternoon in Humble.

According to authorities, the 65-year-old man was confirmed dead when they arrived to the 14500 block of Smith Road.

Witnesses say the man was a construction worker who had been working in the area for months.

"They were picking up their equipment and in some way, some form, the gentleman that was killed stepped into the open manhole," Mike Garver said. "It had been covered with plywood but it didn't hold him."

No other details have been released.
