Hillary returns to Texas to court Hispanic voters

AUSTIN, TX (KTRK) -- Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton courted a specific part of the electorate during two events in San Antonio Thursday.

"I believe talent is universal but opportunity is not in America today," she said, kicking off her national Latinos for Hillary grassroots movement.

That large, spirited rally was highlighted by an endorsement from former Mayor and current HUD Secretary Julian Castro.

"As first lady" said Secretary Castro, "as a United States Senator, and as Secretary of State, she's been fighting for children and families to give them a chance to reach their own dreams."

Clinton took shots at Republicans who she says are unsympathetic to immigrants and working families. To raucous applause and chants of her name, she said immigration reform and helping the middle class are among her top priorities.

"I'm running for president to change all that. I'm working to help middle class and working families get a raise," she said. "Our country has come a long way these past six and a half years; thanks to the hard work and the sacrifice of people like you and the leadership of President Barack Obama, we are standing again. I gotta tell you folks, I don't think President Obama gets the credit he deserves for preventing us from falling into a great depression. But we're not yet running the way America should."

Clinton also met with members from the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in an invitation-only event before her rally. She told that crowd she wants to be known as the "Small Business President." She is the sixth candidate to engage in a question-and-answer session with the USHCC.

After her events in San Antonio, Clinton headed to Houston. She is attending a $2,700 per person fundraiser in The Bayou City at the home of a local attorney.
