A building that will soon be the home of a church caught fire overnight

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A building being renovated to become a church caught on fire overnight in downtown Houston.

It happened at the old Meridian Club building on St. Emanuel at Chartres Street.

When firefighters got there, the building was filled with smoke, making it difficult for firefighters to find the flames. They say only a small portion of the building was burning, and the flames might have smoldered for hours.

The building is under renovation, and there was no power to the 50,000-square foot facility. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
