NEW CANEY, TX (KTRK) -- A family lost all their belongings and some of their pets after a fire ripped through their home in New Caney.

Around 2:00am this morning, Veronica Allen woke up to what sounded like a loud pop on her front porch at her home on Grove Lane. Her husband, Dave, went to investigate and found heavy fire coming from the front of the house.

The couple grabbed their two-year-old son and ran outside in nothing but underclothes. Dave also rescued his dog from the kennel in the house, but the couple was unable to locate the family cat before the fire got too intense.

Dave also attempted to rescue a litter of pups from the front porch, but he cut his hand and was only able to rescue one pup. The other puppies died in the fire.

New Caney, Porter and Caney Creek Fire Departments then arrived and began fighting the fire. As crews entered the home, one room flashed over and flames erupted through the attic.

All firefighters were then evacuated due to safety concerns.

The home was recently given to the family by Veronica's ailing father. They say it was not yet insured and have lost everything.

The Red Cross is now working to help the family.
