Dr. Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo has been found guilty of aggravated assault in a dating relationship for poisoning her former lover

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Jurors will hear closing arguments Monday morning in the trial of an MD Anderson cancer doctor convicted Friday of poisoning a co-worker; a co-worker who was also her lover.

Dr. Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo has been found guilty of aggravated assault with a person in a dating relationship. Jurors deliberated for about four hours before reaching the verdict. They had the day off yesterday after closing arguments on Wednesday.

Gonzalez-Angulo, a breast cancer doctor, is accused of spiking researcher George Blumenschein's coffee in 2013 with a chemical found in antifreeze. Blumenschein survived, but testified his kidneys are only functioning at 40%.

He calls Gonzalez-Angulo dangerous, "The defendant told me that she had people executed in Colombia."

Still, he says he is happy about the verdict.

"I'm thankful. I'm very pleased to see that justice was served," he said.

Much of the testimony in the trial was about the relationship between the two doctors, who were having an affair.

Jurors were able to consider aggravated assault and aggravated assault in a dating relationship. They went with the latter charge, which is more serious and carries a maximum sentence of up to life in prison.

Prosecutors allege Gonzalez-Angulo's relationship with Blumenschein turned into a "fatal attraction" after he spurned her for his longtime girlfriend, Evette Toney. Defense attorneys argued others, including Toney, may be responsible. Toney denied the allegation.

Gonzalez-Angulo faces anywhere from five years to life in prison. She is also eligible for probation.
