Body of missing fisherman found
The fisherman apparently slipped into a canal and never came back up

FORT BEND COUNTY, TX (KTRK) -- Early this morning, two longtime friends from Wharton went to a favorite fishing spot off a Fort Bend County farm road. This afternoon, only one of them is going home.

Before noon, Teodoro Carranza, 68, slipped into the waist-high water of an old rice drainage canal, where the pair had been fishing for several hours. The area is a popular place for fishing among locals.

Although the water is shallow, Carranza apparently disappeared beneath it, and his friend couldn't find him.

The companion called 911. After two hours of searching by the Fort Bend Sheriff's office, the victim's body was found not far from where he went in, near a culvert. He was beyond help.

A sheriff's office spokesman said his family came to the scene, but remain distraught.

The water was shallow, the current was slow. "But that's a reminder to people that you can never let your guard down around water, no matter how safe it appears."
