HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Deputies said a homeowner fought back during an attempted robbery in north Harris County, shooting and killing one suspect as several others fled the scene.

Investigators said around 2 p.m., a small group of men came to The Palms on Rolling Creek Apartments on Rolling Creek Drive near Cypress Creek Parkway. This is a short drive away from the North Freeway.

The suspects attempted to rob a man who was at home with his wife.

During the attempted robbery, the resident grabbed a weapon and exchanged gunfire with the suspects.

Deputies said he hit one of the men, who died at the scene.

Investigators are at the scene of a deadly double shooting in north Harris County.

The resident himself was transported to the hospital after being shot.

His wife was also taken for observation after she began experiencing shortness of breath.

Investigators said they are looking for surveillance video that might have caught images of the several other suspects who sped off from the scene.

In fact, the cause of death for the robbery suspect at the scene is still in doubt, because deputies said he was hit by one of the suspects' speeding cars as they fled the apartment complex.
