METRO officer dies 10 days after violent crash on Gulf Fwy

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- METRO police are mourning the loss of an officer who died after being injured in a crash on the Gulf Freeway.

Officer Elias "Sonny" Martinez was off-duty and escorting an oversized load 10 days ago on the freeway near FM 646.

METRO said he was involved in a crash and died of his injuries on Sunday.

Martinez was a 25-year veteran assigned to METRO's motor unit.

Police Chief Vera Bumpers called Martinez "a very special person who will be missed greatly."
