GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A former Galveston ISD teacher is behind bars after being accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

Eliezer Marquez, 27, allegedly met the 16-year-old girl through a family friend while he worked at Ball High. Investigators say they began texting each other outside of school hours.

Investigators allege Marquez kissed the girl and put his hand up her skirt during a meeting in his classroom last year. The victim said she also had sexual intercourse with Marquez in his truck, and a forensic investigation revealed that Marquez and the victim sent nude photos to each other.

"Galveston ISD takes this matter very seriously, and we are deeply concerned that it appears something of this nature has happened at one of our schools and to one of our students," the district said in a statement.

Marquez had resigned his position by the time a warrant was issued for his arrest, police say.

Marquez has been charged with sexual assault of a child and improper relationship between an educator and a student, both felonies, and is being held on $40,000 bond.
