Tribute artist honors Robin Williams' memory

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- People around the world are mourning the death of Robin Williams. But few followed his career like Houston's own David Born.

"You ain't never had a friend like me," Born said. "Yeah, that's kind of how I feel about Robin. You ain't never had a friend like me."

Born is a Robin Williams tribute artist. He's spent the past 20 years studying Williams' comedy style, mannerisms, even singing voice. Still, he knows he's just an impersonator.

"You'll never see another Robin Williams," he said. "His uniqueness and the things that he puts together. I think he could relate to people age 12 to 90 and that's what made him so special."

Born even met Williams at a comedy show in downtown Houston more than a decade ago.

"He said, 'Check it out, David. I've got all these projects going on and if anything I'm doing is helping to get you work, more power to you.'"

Affirmation from a teacher to a student. "My job, and what a job it is, is to continue Robin's persona, to keep his work alive and let people remember," Born said.
