Here's why recess is so important for children
A non-profit group is helping teachers promote physical activity and social and emotional learning

ALIEF, TX (KTRK) -- Eyewitness News employees enjoyed an afternoon of recess today at Alexander Elementary in Alief.

Employees volunteered with Playworks, a non-profit organization that provides recess coaches to hundreds of low-income schools in major urban areas. Playworks also trains teachers and school employees on how to make recess both fun, inclusive, and safe.

"It promotes anti-bullying," Sandra Curphey, Executive Director of Playworks Texas, said, "Our recess promotes physical activity and social and emotional learning."

"I have seen them learning how to work together, how to solve problems by themselves, without the help of an adult," 2nd grade teacher Porshe Nickerson said.

16 schools in Alief ISD participate in the recess program.
