HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Houston school will have a new name when students show up for class in the morning.

The Houston ISD school board voted Thursday night to immediately rename the Young Men's College Preparatory Academy as The Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men. The late congressman represented the neighborhood where the school is located.

"It's particularly special that it's in fifth ward, that it's for young men. It's for young men like him. I hope that his attachment to it will be an inspiration," said Alison Leland, Mickey's widow.

The campus serves boys in grades 6 through 12 and is being rebuilt to accommodate up to a thousand students.
