HISD marks 1st of staggered first days of school in wake of Hurricane Harvey
Nine HISD schools will not open at all this school year, and those students will resume classes at other locations on Sept. 25.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- It was back to school for some Houston Independent School District students, just two weeks since Hurricane Harvey tore through our city, displacing thousands of students and staff members.

HISD Superintendent Richard Carranza served a hot chicken and biscuit breakfast at the new Codwell Elementary School and discussed the importance of kids returning to a routine.

"The quicker we can get students into a routine, it allows mom and dad to get into a routine and it allows the healing to begin," Carranza said.

Two more back to school dates have been scheduled for HISD. More campuses will open Sept. 18 and Sept. 25, but nine HISD schools will not open at all this school year.

For schools that suffered major damage, those buildings may stay closed for months. But the students will be re-assigned to different buildings.

"We're having to be flexible with our buildings and facilities. We're asking everyone in the district to be flexible. Flexibility is the keyword for the year here at HISD. Because everything is fluid," HISD Press Secretary Tracy Clemons said.

The school district will also provide all of its students with three meals each day.
