FBI Houston Special Agent in Charge Jason Hudson discussed the case during a roundtable with reporters Friday, saying the FBI was called to process the scene after the shooting.
"On July 7, we were requested to process that scene, so we did collect evidence," Hudson said. "In a very short period of time, we called in our local, state, and federal partners as well to show everything we've got. Our timeline. Everything."
The FBI is investigating the alleged assault of a federal officer in connection with the shooting. ICE has said Salgado Araujo allegedly "weaponized" his vehicle during the enforcement operation.
Hudson said the FBI processed evidence at the scene and shared what it had with local, state and federal partners.
But he said the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, is now handling the broader investigation.
When asked whether the FBI knew the identity of the ICE agent involved in the shooting, Hudson said that information would come from DHS.
"That would go through DHS," Hudson said.
Hudson also said he would have preferred the search warrant to remain sealed, making the public release of the document notable.
As the investigation continues, Hudson said the FBI remains prepared to assist DHS and other agencies when its expertise is needed.
"We are seekers of the truth. It's what we do," Hudson said. "If our expertise is needed in an event like that, we will provide it."
The July 7 shooting has prompted protests and calls for more information about what led to the deadly encounter. The investigation remains ongoing.
