HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Detectives say the body of a transgender person was discovered near Brays Bayou in southwest Houston on Monday morning.

According to the Houston Police Department, at about 8:15 a.m. in the 8900 block of Country Creek, walkers found the nude body next to the bayou. Authorities said the Houston Fire Department initially responded to the scene, where officials pronounced the person dead.

Investigators said they are referring to the victim as transgender because of the person's outward appearance. Police said the victim appears to be between the ages of 24 and 30.

Police said this appears to be a murder and are investigating whether the body was dumped near the bayou, stating that "it's not going to be an accident."

HPD said the investigation is underway to determine the victim's cause of death.
