The 28-year-old suspect, Moises Castillo, is charged with murder. Houston police homicide investigators believe he fired the bullet that killed Ada Beatriz Aguilar, a 47-year-old mother.
Authorities arrested Castillo on Monday without incident, according to police. Later Monday, he made his first court appearance, during which his bond was set at $120,000. The prosecutor told the court that surveillance video showed Castillo as the shooter.
ORIGINAL REPORT: Innocent woman killed in shooting involving security guards in southeast Houston
In November 2021, officers with the HPD responded to a report of a one-vehicle crash at 11555 Fuqua St. at about 3:35 a.m.
A man driving a black Ford truck was driving recklessly, according to HPD.
Multiple cars were damaged and two people were hit by his truck.
In response to the chaos, police say security guards working at La Playita Bar stepped in and fired on the truck.
Court records say as many as six guards were firing from three different positions in the parking lot.
Video shows Castillo shooting a rifle. Aguilar, who had just left the bar, was in her truck with friends and in Castillo's line of fire, according to records.
What happens next is also troubling.
According to court records, the video shows two security guards finally attending to Aguilar after six minutes. They pull her out of the truck and find her unresponsive.
In the meantime, two other guards were caught on camera picking up items from the ground and dropping them into a storm drain, where later, investigators found several shell casings, court records say.
Those same guards and Castillo then get into their personal vehicles and leave, never to contact police, records state.
A release from HPD Monday reported that "further investigation" identified Castillo as the suspect. He has no previous charges in Harris County and online records show no related charges for the security guards, whom ABC13 is not naming.
Castillo's public defender told the court he is no longer a security guard, but instead works for his father. If he makes bond, he will have to wear a GPS monitor and adhere to a curfew.
