2013 best year on record for Galveston tourism

GALVESTON, TX (KTRK) -- If you're heading to the beach this weekend, you won't be alone. The Galveston Tourism Bureau says tourism to the island is at an all time high, with 5.8 million visitors every year.

The bureau released its 2013 economic impact study Thursday. It shows visitors to the island generated a $951.8 million economic impact to the local economy. That's up 5% from 2012, which was also a record year for tourism in Galveston.

"Tourism is one of Galveston's most important industries, and we are pleased that our efforts to generate growth have translated into greater revenues for the island," said Kelly de Schaun, executive director of the Galveston Island Convention & Visitors Bureau. "With this being Texas Tourism Week, I can think of no better way to demonstrate how important tourism is for Galveston and our entire state."

De Schaun said a variety of factors have contributed to Galveston's tourism growth. One factor is the recent introduction of several new island attractions like the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier.

Galveston has also seen a spike in national attention. It was named a "top destination" by the Travel Channel, Family Vacation Critic and TripAdvisor in 2013.

"We are thrilled by the island's successes but are working diligently to keep the momentum going, de Schaun said.
