JJ Watt invites injured 12-year-old fan to game

KINGWOOD (KTRK) -- The Houston Texans, including JJ Watt wished a Kingwood 7th-grade football player a speedy recovery after an accident left him with multiple injuries.

Seth Haynes was riding his bike Super Bowl Sunday when a SUV struck him from behind.

HFD and HPD responded to the scene and the 12-year-old was rushed to Children's Memorial Hermann Trauma Center in the Houston Medical Center.

Seth spent a week in the ICU and then an additional week and a half recovering. His injuries included multiple fractures, a broken and dislocated pelvis, his lungs had filled with blood requiring chest tubes and intubation, and he had a severed spinal cord. Remarkably, he had no trauma to his head.

Seth's spinal injury means that he will not have the ability to walk for the foreseeable future.

The Texans heard that Seth was a huge fan and sent a care package to his hospital room. The package included Texans merchandise, an autographed Jadeveon Clowney football and an invitation to a game this year.

JJ Watt recorded a message to Seth wishing him to get well soon and that he hopes to see him at the game this fall.

As mentioned in Watt's message, Seth and his family are now at Shriners Hospital for Children, in Chicago. It is a pediatric facility specializing in spinal cord injuries and rehabilitation. He will spend weeks and possibly even months there in order to recover and learn how to adapt to the consequences of the injuries.

Seth's rehabilitation came to a halt recently because of a Gastro-Intestinal problem caused by the paralysis. This week, they will be taking more x-rays and visiting with a GI doctor to hopefully get his stomach to start working properly again. This will allow him to possibly resume rehabilitation soon.

The driver that hit Seth was issued citations for Failure to Yield and No Insurance.

The incident was discussed and Seth was honored with green and white ribbons at a recent town hall meeting with Mayor Turner in attendance. Friends of the family started a GoFundMe page and are selling "Seth Strong" shirts.
