Redskins left tackle Trent Williams was suspended four games Tuesday for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.
The suspension, which is without pay, begins immediately. He will be eligible to return to the Redskins' roster on Dec. 5, after Washington's game Dec. 4 against the Arizona Cardinals.
He is permitted to take part in team meetings and work out at the team's facility during his suspension.
He will forfeit $1,650,735.29 in base salary and per-game bonuses during his suspension. Williams is in the second year of a five-year, $66 million extension he signed with the Redskins in 2015.
"The Redskins are counting on Trent to help our team when he returns from suspension," the team said in a statement. "Our focus will now turn to the Minnesota Vikings after our bye this upcoming weekend. Any questions related to this matter should be directed to the NFL or NFLPA."
This marks Williams' second four-game suspension -- he tested positive multiple times for marijuana during the 2011 season.
Williams, 28, has been selected to four Pro Bowls in his career. The Redskins drafted him fourth overall in the 2010 draft.
The Redskins have played only three games without Williams since 2012. Williams' athleticism and quick feet enable them to run different plays when he's in the game.
Williams will miss Washington's games against the Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys and Cardinals.
