Texans' Bill O'Brien takes offensive play-calling duties from George Godsey

HOUSTON --Texanshead coach Bill O'Brien will now call plays on offense after taking those duties away from offensive coordinator George Godsey, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter, confirming multiple reports.

O'Brien, who called plays during his first season with the team in 2014, gave the duty to Godsey last year. On Friday, O'Brien wouldn't confirm that he's taken over play-calling duties, only saying that "nothing has changed."

"I'm in charge of every play that goes into the game," O'Brien said. "You'd be amazed at how many defensive calls I've made, how many special teams calls I've made and how many offensive calls I've made in the years that I've been here. And most of them haven't worked, let me put it to you that way. So it doesn't matter who calls the plays. It's about the execution, it's about going out there and playing good football.

"As a head football coach, that's what you're paid to do -- to be making sure that the calls that go into the game are basically approved by you as the head football coach. So none of that matters. I don't even know why that's a story. It's not a story. Nothing has changed."

The Texans added offense this offseason, signing quarterback Brock Osweiler, running back Lamar Miller and drafting wide receiver Will Fuller in the first round.

Through three games, the Texans, coming off a 27-0 loss to the New England Patriots, have scored only three touchdowns. Houston has also struggled in the red zone, scoring one touchdown in seven tries this season.

After the loss to the Patriots, O'Brien said he thought the coaching staff had a good plan coming in, but the offense did not execute well.

"We really have to go back as a coaching staff and really look at what we did, learn from it, and try to fix it," O'Brien said. "We really need to put our heads together and get after it and get better for the next game, no doubt about it."

The Texans next play theTennessee Titans, with whom they are tied with an NFL-low 42 points this season. Houston ranks 24th in the league in total offense.
