Mustafi, 22, made his third appearance at the tournament when called upon to replace Mats Hummels who was suffering from a cold.

However, the defender only lasted 70 minutes before departing the action himself.

Germany coach Joachim Low told his news conference after the match: "He tore a muscle. I think that he will not be able to play a role in this tournament. He will definitely be sidelined for two or three weeks."

Low was criticised by German media for selecting Mustafi to start against Algeria.

The news means that Low will again have to change his shuffle his defence for the quarterfinal against France on Friday. Germany captain Philipp Lahm, who replaced Mustafi for the final 50 minutes of the match, could be an option if Mats Hummels does not return in time.
