Seattle beats RSL to end losing streak; Almiron hat trick as Atlanta rolls

Harry Shipp scored on a well-struck shot that was deflected into goal in the 42nd minute as the Seattle Sounders snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday with a 1-0 win againstReal Salt Lake.

The play that led to Shipp's second goal of the season started with a corner kick from the right side from Nicolas Lodeiro. His drive into the penalty area was headed right back out to him, and he again sent it toward the goal.

Sounders defender Gustav Svensson headed the ball out to the top of the box and Shipp gained control 16 yards away and fired toward the right post. RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando dove in that direction, but the ball deflected off defender Reagan Dunk and into the far corner.

The Sounders had dominated the first half, with nearly 75 percent of the possession, but were kept off the board with four saves by Rimando. He denied Jordan Morris twice, Lodeiro once, and Svensson once.

Rimando also stopped a Clint Dempsey penalty kick in the 55th minute.

Salt Lake has lost four of its last five and has just one win in its last 12 road games.

Miguel Almiron scored three goals to lead expansion Atlanta United to a 4-1 win over the Houston Dynamo.

After the start was delayed 55 minutes by lightning, Almiron produced some fireworks of his own.

Taking a short pass from Yamil Asad and then making a nice touch to get open, Almiron found the top left corner in the 30th minute and the top right in the 42nd.

He got his third goal, and sixth of the season, on a penalty kick to close out the scoring for Atlanta in the 80th minute.

Julian Gressel tapped home a loose ball during a scramble in the box in the 76th minute for Atlanta's other goal.

Alex Kahn made four saves for Atlanta before Erick Torres picked up his ninth goal on a penalty kick in the 90th minute.

Houston is 2-20-8 in its last 30 road games and has been outscored by 32 goals in those matches away from home.

The Montreal Impact pulled away from 10-man Portland Timbersto win 4-1 in the opener of a full slate of action in Major League Soccer.

Ignacio Piatti opened the scoring for the hosts from the penalty spot, sending Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson the wrong way after Vytautas Andriuskevicius hauled down Blerim Dzemaili in the penalty area.

Portland's Diego Chara saw straight red in the 18th minute for knocking Piatti to the turf, leaving the Timbers with just 10 men for the rest of the match.

Montreal took advantage of the extra man and doubled its lead in the 43rd minute when Kyle Fisher headed home from a cross following aDzemaili corner kick.

But the visitors would claw one back just before the break, with Diego Valeri getting his head on an Alvas Powell corner to make the score 2-1 at half-time.

Montreal would pile on in the second half, with Piatti scoring his second in the 50th minute andAmbroise Oyongo a fourth for the Impact to send Caleb Porter's team home empty-handed.

David Accam scored on a breakaway and the Chicago Fire beat D.C. United 1-0 for their first road victory of the season.

After the Fire were unable to take advantage of several chances in the first half, Accam took a pass from Luis Solignac, got behind the back line and scored at the far post in the 52nd minute. Accam has six goals this season.

D.C. United, with just two shots on target, was shut out for the third straight time, all at home. The Washington club has been blanked seven times, scoring just nine goals in 11 games. They were without their leading attacker, Luciano Acosta, who was serving a red card suspension.

The Fire, who won their third straight, could have padded the score except for the six saves made by Bill Hamid.

Cristian Techera and Tim Parker scored in the Vancouver Whitecaps' 2-0 win against Sporting Kansas City.

Vancouver opened the scoring in the 40th minute when Techera, the Uruguayan nicknamed "The Bug," smashed a left-footed volley past goalkeeper Tim Melia for his third goal of the season.

Sporting had a chance in the 20th minute when Gerso Fernandes found himself all alone in front of goalkeeper David Ousted, but he rolled the ball wide of the post.

Vancouver had an opportunity to double its lead in the 53rd minute after Kansas City defender Seth Sinovic fouled Fredy Montero in the Sporting penalty area, but Melia stopped the striker's spot kick and follow-up.

Parker scored in the 67th minute to seal the win for Vancouver over the West's top team.

The Philadelphia Union set a team record with their fourth-straight victory, beating the Colorado Rapids 2-1 at Talen Energy Stadium.

Haris Medunjanin sent a free kick from outside the box over Colorado's wall and past goalkeeper Tim Howard to seal the win for the hosts.

C.J. Sapong, with his eighth goal this season, tied it for Philadelphia in the 67th minute on a penalty kick after Kortne Ford was called for a foul for rolling onto the ball inside the penalty area.

Medunjanin's winner came in the 75th.

Caleb Calvert ended the Union's shutout run at four with his first MLS goal in the 15th minute with a nice chip to beat Andre Blake.

But it was Calvert who left the Rapids a man short after receiving two yellows in a span of a few minutes, the second one coming in the 69th after he left the field with a trainer then re-entered the field without permission from the referee.

Colorado assistant Conor Casey also was sent off with Calvert, in a match where seven yellow cards were shown.

Jahmir Hyka scored on a spectacular move in the 81st minute and the San Jose Earthquakes handed FC Dallas a 1-0 loss, its first of the season.

Hyka took a pass from Marco Urena and touched the ball straight up over defender Matt Hedges as he raced by before putting the ball in off the post for his third goal.

David Bingham made three difficult saves for his fifth shutout, the 25th in his seven seasons with San Jose. The Earthquakes, who played Wednesday night, had just one win in their previous 12 road games and had been shutout six times and outscored by 13.

Hyka's goal also ended a string in which Chris Wondolowski had scored or assisted on the last seven Quakes goals.

Dallas was unbeaten in its previous eight games with San Jose, outscoring the Quakes 12-4 with five clean sheets.

Dallas dominated most of the game with 62 percent possession, while Jesse Gonzalez only made one save, but the Quakes had the luck on the night and left the defending Supporters' Shield winners with no points from their home contest.
