Houston Astros slugger George Springer is being evaluated for a concussion and was to miss at least one game after crashing face-first into the padded right-field wall Tuesday night while making a catch.
Springer's cap sailed off his head and he fell to the ground as he snared a liner hit by Adrian Beltre in the seventh inning of the Astros' 7-1 loss to the Texas Rangersat Minute Maid Park. He missed Wednesday's game against the Rangers.
Springer got up slowly and walked off the field before being replaced by Jonathan Villar for the eighth inning.
"That was a scary play," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "Everybody has seen that before, when he's flying into the foul wall last night. He's going as hard as can be tonight, and he's pretty banged up. When he got up, we were starting to head out there to see what happened.
"He did hit his head on the wall. You could tell he was a little bit dazed and he was going full speed when he did it. Complete disregard for anything but trying to catch the ball. That's the way he plays."
Hinch said Colby Rasmus would play the outfield in Springer's absence Wednesday. If Springer is diagnosed with a concussion, he would be placed on the seven-day disabled list.
"He'll go through a battery of tests through our doctors, through our trainers," Hinch said. "These are all standard tests that we would run any time the head's involved. But it jarred his contact [lens] a little bit, so I think that was a little bit weird for him when you can't see out of one eye a little bit. We learned that was just the contact moving."
Springer is hitting .192 with four home runs and 12 RBIs this season.
