SAN DIEGO -- Dick Enberg, who has been calling Major League Baseball games in Southern California for nearly 20 seasons, has won the Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting.

Baseball's Hall of Fame made the announcement on Wednesday at the winter meetings.

"When I think of this honor today ... 'Enberg, you hit a grand slam,' " he said.

His tenure calling ballgames -- he has been the television play-by-play voice of the San Diego Padres since 2010 -- was split by stints as one of the most recognizable voices on NBC and CBS.

He also was a longtime tennis play-by-play announcer for ESPN, calling Wimbledon and the U.S., French and Australian opens.

Enberg, who turns 80 on Jan. 9, is the 39th winner of the Frick Award. He will be honored during the Hall of Fame awards presentation July 25 in Cooperstown, New York.

Famed for his "Oh, my!" call, Enberg was the voice of the California Angels from 1968 to 1978 before shifting to commentating on a national level.
