Briante Weber agrees to two-way contract with Rockets

Free-agent guard Briante Weber has agreed to a two-way contract with the Houston Rockets, league sources told ESPN.

Weber, 24, a defensive specialist, will initially report to the Rockets' G League affiliate in Rio Grande, but he will have the opportunity to be called up to Houston -- especially with the absence of All-Star point guard Chris Paul.

Paul is expected to be sidelined with a knee injury for two to three more weeks.

Each NBA team is allowed to keep two two-way contracts on a roster. Two-way players will play most of the season in the G League and can spend no more than 45 days on the NBA roster. They are paid a higher salary while with the NBA team.

Weber's deal includes a team option for the 2018-19 season, league sources said.

The two-way deal doesn't count against the Rockets' roster, which has 14 players under contract --- one below the league maximum of 15. For now, the Rockets are planning to hold on to the roster flexibility and keep a spot open, league sources said.

Weber has had stops with Memphis, Miami, Golden State and Charlotte since joining the NBA as an undrafted senior out of VCU, where he was a three-time Defensive Player of the Year in the Atlantic 10.

He was a second-team NBA Development League choice and a first-team all-defensive team pick for Sioux Falls in 2017.
