Aqib Talib out of hospital, returning to Denver after being shot

WASHINGTON -- Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib was discharged from a Dallas hospital Monday and is expected to return to Denver either Tuesday or Wednesday as he continues to recover from a gunshot wound to his lower right leg.

"I talked to Aqib at length [Sunday] and again [Monday] morning,'' Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said Monday, after President Barack Obama honored the team for its Super Bowl championship. "The most important thing is he's OK. And our steps right now are to get him back to Denver hopefully [Tuesday] or Wednesday to get him headed in the right direction.''

The Broncos said Talib was shot in the lower right leg, the result of a reported incident at a nightclub early Sunday morning in Dallas, where he has an offseason home.

The 30-year-old was treated at a Dallas hospital Sunday and remained there overnight before being discharged Monday. Talib did not make the trip to the White House due to the injury.

Earlier Monday, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that a bullet entered and exited Talib's leg but hit no arteries and tore no ligaments. Broncos officials said Monday that Talib did not require surgery.

"I talked to him briefly,'' linebacker Von Miller said. "Everything is going to be OK.''

Miller added that had Talib made the trip to the White House, he was "pretty sure [Talib] had an all red, white and blue suit prepared.''

Broncos executive vice president John Elway also has spoken to Talib in the past two days, as well as several players.

The team does not believe Talib suffered any serious injuries that would significantly impede his participation in offseason preparations.

The Broncos begin their mandatory three-day minicamp Tuesday.

Talib has had trouble off the field in the past.

In 2009, he was arrested and charged with simple battery and resisting arrest for assaulting a cab driver. The NFL suspended him for the first game of the 2010 season, and he was entered into a pretrial diversion program and ordered to attend anger management classes. He reached an undisclosed financial settlement with the driver.

Talib was indicted on an aggravated assault charge for an incident near Dallas in 2011. He allegedly pistol-whipped his sister's boyfriend and fired shots at the man, but the charge was later dismissed for lack of evidence.

In 2014, the Broncos were initially informed that Talib had been arrested in Dallas, but it was actually Talib's brother, Yaqub Talib, who had been arrested.

In 2015, Aqib and Yaqub Talib were questioned at the scene of an aggravated assault at a Dallas nightclub. Aqib Talib's car was towed and examined for evidence, but he was not charged.

The Pro Bowler signed a six-year, $57 million deal with the Broncos in 2014.
