Veterans come together to build community garden, library

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- This Veteran's Day weekend veterans are coming together to make a difference. A group of veterans are volunteers for the group called The Mission Continues.

"The Mission Continues is an organization where, you know, in the military we serve. When we serve we're always on a mission, we're doing, we're serving the community," said Valerie James with the Mission Continues.

The group does beautification projects throughout the Houston area all year long. On Saturday they worked on one of the biggest projects of the year. They revitalized L & S Small World Academy, a daycare in the Independence Heights.

About 150 to 200 veterans completely revamped the daycare. They built picnic tables, planters for gardens, a library inside and an outdoor classroom. Also, they painted the entire inside of the 6,300 square-foot building.

About 100 kids attend the daycare, many of them come from underprivileged homes. The daycare owner says the veterans are building a foundation for the kids and their future.

"That says they (the veterans) see a vision," said Robert LeDay of L & S World Academy.

The Mission Continues does about 30 service projects all over Houston every year.
