National Night Out
Residents are banding together tonight to help make their neighborhood safer

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Food, laughter and fun! That's the goal tonight as The Houston Police Department kicks off National Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 7.

This is a national event focused on America's Night Out Against Crime. The purpose of National Night Out is to build stronger police-community partnerships. Officers want citizens to learn about crime watch efforts in their neighborhood.

The purpose is to heighten crime prevention awareness and generate local support of anti-crime initiatives.

Nationwide, law enforcement agencies have their own unique way of participating. The Houston Police Chief believes this is a positive way to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relations.

Officers hope to send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back against crime.

Everyone is encouraged to turn on their front porch lights at dusk, walk outside and visit with their neighbors. Officers will be out in the neighborhoods this evening to answer questions and express concerns about the community.

Other communities outside Houston have their own events planned. Just contact your local law enforcement agency to find out events in your community.
