Park honoring child's memory set to open in north Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A dream 6 years in the making is almost ready to open in north Houston.

City and community leaders held a ribbon cutting today for Dylan Park. The property is located on Rankin Road just off the North Freeway. The place is named for 3-year-old Dylan Newman. He died in 2009 from injuries caused by child abuse. His killer was never caught.

At the ceremony, Dylan's dad thanked everybody for remembering his son.

"He would be extremely proud of this park in his name 100 percent," said Richard Newman.

What makes the park so unique is half of it is dedicated to those children with special needs. The playground and other features are wheelchair accessible.

The other half is a massive skate park. Creators said it is now the largest in North America, the second largest in the world.

The park opens to the public on August 14.
