Holiday lunch for Houston's homeless
The Christmas spirit is alive and well in Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Dozens of volunteers took time away from their families this Christmas to help those who have nowhere to go.

Outside The Salvation Army Greater Houston Area Command on McGowen Street the sound of the Harbor Light Choir could be heard as people made their way into the building for a hearty Christmas Day meal.

From Christmas classics to sharing holiday cheer a woman named Christine said outside, "I'm so happy. I lost my job a month ago and I have no food stamps."

Some of the meal recipients came alone another woman came with nine grandchildren saying, "The mom is critical, very sick."

The smiles here are very contagious.

Amanda Hernandez is dressed in an Elf costume and says, "You see presents here in my hand but really it's about serving the seed of hope and that's what it's about this time of year.

Volunteer Jonina Dickey is dressed equally festive.

"I've been promoted to the Elf so I feel very fortunate. My husband works in the kitchen and my daughter is a server here," she said.

A few blocks away at Peggy's Point Park Plaza at Main and Wheeler volunteers served several hundred under tents. One server said, "We're all having such a great time. The weather turned out wonderful."

James Latson is a volunteer who does mission work he says, "This is good. It's what Jesus wanted us to do. He told us to come out here and feed the homeless."

Whatever their hope is or however the recipients respond the day may come to an end but the hope is the feelings will carry on.
