Best buys for bulk Halloween candy

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Don't let the price of chocolate scare you this Halloween!

We checked out the drug store, the grocery store, and the discount store to see who had the best price. We did the shopping for you, to make sure you get the best buy on candy, specifically chocolate.

At Walgreens, the store had Kit Kat, Twix, and M&Ms fun size bags for $1.99 with an in-store coupon.

While they had bigger bags in bulk, it was cheaper to pick up the smaller bags. For example, the bigger bags of Kit Kats was $6.29, which is $0.31 per ounce. But the smaller bag priced at $1.99 is $0.21 an ounce.

Consumers found that the drug store was a great deal.

"Sometimes you do pay for the convenience, but when you have all these holiday special and things like that, because everybody is getting their candy right now, they are running those deals and coupons," said Walgreens customer Dianne Powell.

Also, at the Walgreens we shopped, you can return unopened bags of candy after Halloween for a full refund with your receipt.

At Kroger, the prices were a little more expensive. Their Snickers, Baby Ruth, or Butterfinger fun size packs are priced at two bags for $5. We also found bags of bulk candy with 100-300 pieces for as much as $19.99.

We calculated the price per ounce, and the fun size bag is actually a better buy than the bulk size candy bag.

At Walmart, they have Reese's, Snickers, and Butterfingers at the roll back price of $2.50. Bulk bags are priced at $8.98 and $13.98.

Something else to keep in mind is that not all the candy in the variety packs is considered real chocolate, so pay close attention. We found that chocolate flavored candy in those assorted bulk bags was less expensive.
