Green, other incumbents fight off challengers in Texas primary
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It's a big night not just for presidential candidates hoping to secure their political party's nomination, but also for Houston-area candidates running for various big positions.
The Associated Press reports U.S. Rep. Gene Green won the U.S. Representative District 29 Democratic primary race. Green was being challenged by longtime friend and former Harris County sheriff Adrian Garcia, who entered the race after losing in the Houston mayoral race last November.
"We're at a point where we have to respect the voters," Garcia told supporters during his concession speech Tuesday night. "First, let me congratulate Gene Green. It was a hard-fought race and I have always said, and still remain steadfast, that this was never personal."
Green doesn't see it that way.
When asked whether this race put a strain on his friendship with Garcia, he replied, "It'll be tough because of some of the way they ran the campaign. Friends don't do that to friends, even in politics, so we have some healing to do, I think."
In District 7, U.S. Rep. John Culberson secured his nomination for the Republican party, according to the Associated Press.
U.S. Rep Kevin Brady in The Woodlands also secured his GOP nomination for the District 8 race.
