Dog reunited with owner after two-mile swim

A pit bull is alive after the quick thinking of a tug boat captain

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (KTRK) -- An 18-month-old pit bull who jumped off a Florida sea wall survived after swimming about two miles to the nearest piece of land she could find.

John Calia is Gypsy's relieved owner, who feared the worst when he couldn't find her after the jump, WSVN-TV reports.

When Missy vanished for three weeks, her owners in Massachusetts thought they would never hear from her again. And then, the phone rang.

"I come back out here, and she's nowhere to be found," Calia said. "I looked over here, looked to the side of the house."

Calia says he thinks Gypsy became intrigued by something in the water and dove to catch it.

But the 68-pound puppy soon found herself with a choice: sink or swim.

A tow boat captain happened to find Gypsy two miles away at the Secret Woods Nature Center in Dania Beach, trying to hang on for dear life to a piece of driftwood.

The captain said she was exhausted and nearly out of time and energy.

"She had to go up here, make a left, go all the way to the main tributary, and then go all the way to the Riverland roads in New River," said Calia. "She literally traveled like two miles."

Calia said the captain is a hero for coming to Gypsy's rescue.
