WEST UNIVERSITY, Texas (KTRK) -- Over the course of more than a half-hour on Sept. 26, 2016, police say a disgruntled attorney shot at people indiscriminately on the quiet streets near West University.

According to police, Nathan Desai used two firearms to wound 10 people, most of whom were on their way to work.

Officers responding to the active shooter opened fire on Desai, killing him.

A person who knew Desai recalled the suspect had appeared erratic in the two months before the rampage.

"The thought came to my mind, 'I really hope it's not Nathan, part of the situation,'" said John Elmore with RISE Association Management Group, the property manager for The Oaks at West University, where Desai lived.

Earlier last year, Desai had parted ways with his law partner of 12 years.

Desai's father said he took the professional separation hard.

"He's upset about the law practice not going well -- financial reasons," explained Prakash Desai, who had dinner with his son less than 12 hours before the shooting.

As for the victims, their conditions ranged from minor to critical.

Kevin Chap said he went from kissing his wife and children goodbye, to being surrounded by gunfire.

Ryan Kaylor told us he was on his way to his new job when he tried to get around first-responders in his vehicle. Figuring it was some sort of auto accident, he soon found out it was an active shooting situation when a bullet went through the passenger window and struck his arm.

While none of Desai's victims were killed, the shooting was a shocking and tragic jolt to a neighborhood that would find this unimaginable.
