A wrong way driver caused a crash that shut down the main lanes of the Eastex Freeway at Calvacade

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A wrong way crash shut down the southbound lanes of the Eastex Freeway early this morning.



The accident happened just before 4:00am on US 59 just before Cavalcade Street. According to investigators on scene, a male driver was heading northbound in the southbound lanes when he slammed into another driver head on.



Officers said the driver at fault was taken to Ben Taub. He's expected to be okay. They told us the driver hit suffered serious injuries. Paramedics also took him to Ben Taub Hospital.



Traffic was diverted onto 610 while police investigated. The freeway was reopened just before 5:30am.



Officers could not initially say if the crash was alcohol related.
