HOUSTON (KTRK) -- There is controversy as a woman was evicted from her home and ended up spending the night outdoors because she had nowhere to go.

That woman lived at a Pepper Tree Manor, a senior living facility in northwest Houston up until last night.

Martha Jane Johnson, 68, was evicted from her apartment at 5950 Antoine Drive at Tidwell. Attorneys for the property told Eyewitness News that Johnson was behind on rent.

But what we still don't know is why she had to sleep outside.

"She (property manager) came out there while I was talking to the doctor. She said, 'Get out. Get off this property. You better be gone,'" said Johnson.

We asked her if she slept outside the property.

"She told me I better not come back in that building. She called me a bald head (expletive)," she said. "I was out there in the heat."

Eyewitness News confronted the manager and asked her about the situation.

"It's a legal matter," responded the manager. "You'll need to ask the constables that."

We reached out to the Precinct One Constable's Office and they confirmed Ms. Johnson was evicted yesterday. The constable's office says a mental health unit to the complex to evaluate her, however it was decided that the service was not needed.

Attorneys for the Pepper Tree Manor said Johnson was given enough notice to vacate and the eviction process began last July.

As for Johnson, she says she doesn't know where she is going to sleep tonight and she has reached out to family for help.
