A lightning strike may be to blame for an apartment fire in east Harris County

ATASCOCITA, TX (KTRK) -- Multiple firefighting units were called to an apartment fire in Atascocita this morning.

The fire broke out at the Sunrise at Atascocita apartment complex in the 7800 block of FM 1960 East. Harris County fire marshals say there had been a lightening strike in building one.

"About 4 o'clock, there was a loud boom and I thought it was just a thunderstorm right about us," said resident Jennifer Nelson.

Cellphone pictures show the massive flames shooting in the air as some residents were still inside the apartment building.

That's when Elizabeth Baxter and her husband jumped into action.

"I was on my way to work my husband was driving and we looked over to the left and saw the flames," Baster said. "We stopped the car and we just started banging on the door yelling fire fire and grabbed an elderly couple that had no clothes on. We covered them in blankest got them to the EMS."

Two people including a firefighter were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The fire displaced 24 families who were bused to a safer location. Most of them lost everything.

"You see about it on TN and you read about it in the papers and you never think hey thats going to happen to me and it does happen," said resident John Cochran. "Its kind of surreal."
