CONROE, TX (KTRK) -- Two Montgomery County sheriff's deputies were injured when they were struck by a vehicle after stopping to help a stranded motorist on Interstate 45 near Highway 105 early Wednesday morning.

The deputies had stopped to help a driver whose engine stalled in the middle of the freeway.

Sgt. Dorcy Riddle with the Conroe Police Department said, "They were able to assist that motorist. The motorist began to drive away. As the deputies returned to their patrol vehicle, a Grand Cherokee traveling in lane four began to veer into their lane."

Sgt. Riddle says the two tried to get out of the way, but a black Jeep hit their cruiser on the passenger side, and then hit them.

"Both deputies were struck, one more of a glancing blow," Sgt. Riddle explained. "The other one took a full-on blow, landed on top of the vehicle, traveled for about 150 feet with the vehicle where he was then ejected off the top of the vehicle."

Both deputies were taken to Conroe Regional Medical Center. The less seriously injured man was treated and released.

Their names haven't been released, but the wife of the deputy that suffered the more serious injuries says he broke both his legs and underwent surgery.

Police say they don't suspect alcohol was a factor. Sgt. Riddle says the rainy and foggy weather we had may have played a part.
