At 15 people displaced after fire breaks out at NW Harris Co. complex
HOUSTON -- A two-alarm fire destroyed 16 units of a northwest Harris County apartment complex Thursday.
It happened at the Aurora Place apartment complex on Fallbrook and FM 1960. Flames spread to a nearby grass field.
"This time, everything is gone. My mom stuff is gone. She's wondering back-and-forth, what are you gonna do?" said Anikka Gray.
Gray said everything in her apartment is gone. She could only salvage a few boxes of stuff that she was seen carrying out late Thursday evening.
"It's sad because little kids got to go through this. It's terrible. Lost all their stuff," said Gray's friend Jasmine Griffin.
Griffin said she was home when the fire started below her apartment. She said neighbors tried to put the fire out with extinguishers, but it was getting larger and spreading.
Griffin said in the parking lot, she found two children who were separated from their mother.
"They were like we can't find my mom, she still in the building. Because she went back in the building to go and get the dog, the building was on fire," said Griffin.
The children's mother was eventually located and reunited with her kids.
We spoke with one man who has three children and was burned out of his apartment.
"I'm just trying to get my kids to my parents' house so they can go to bed try to get ready for school tomorrow," said Hugh Moore.
He said last year, a fire ripped through 19 apartments in a building across from his home. This time, the fire burned his apartment.
No official cause has been determined. The Red Cross is on scene assisting residents. So far, officials have identified at least 15 people who don't have a place to stay for the night.
A Red Cross representative said there's a good chance a shelter will be set up for those fire victims and their young children.
