Teen's ex-girlfriend testifies against him in murder trial

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The suspect in the "satanic" murder case is the father of an 18-month-old child, according to the suspect's former girlfriend.

Lapita Gonzalez, 20, testified in court Tuesday that Jose Reyes is the father of her baby. Gonzalez said she was not romantically involved with Reyes at the time of the murder, but that she was still living in with him and his family.

Gonzalez said she heard Reyes tell someone else in their house that he killed Coriann Cervantes. Gonzalez was worried for her safety and the safety of their child. She said she called a police officer she knew to report what she heard.

Gonzalez also testified that Reyes drew a picture of an upside down cross and the numbers "666" on his bedside table.

Prosecutors played a video of the crime scene for the jury and showed them still pictures of the victim's body. A Houston police officer testified that the pictures show chunks of a porcelain toilet tank lid lodged into the victim's face.

If convicted of capital murder, Jose Reyes, 17, could spend the rest of his life in prison.
