Suspect fatally shot in armored car robbery attempt outside NW Houston bank

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police say the suspect in an armored car robbery attempt is dead after he was shot by an armored car employee outside a northwest Houston bank this morning.

It happened at the Bank of America drive-through at 7620 North Shepherd at North Victory around 7:43am. Houston Police spokesperson Victor Senties said a Dunbar armored car was filling the ATM at the location when a man approached with a gun and demanded cash.

Senties said, "He came forward in a very aggressive manner, he was yelling, 'Give me the money, give me the money.' He had his gun drawn, pointed at the security guard from the vehicle."

Police say the armored car security guard shot the suspect.

Police will only say at this time they believe the suspect is a black male. The suspect's weapon was recovered.

The armored car robbery is being handled by HPD Homicide and an FBI Bank Robbery Task Force.

Authorities say this is the seventh armored car robbery this year in Houston/Harris County that the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force has responded to, which is less than last calendar year, but still higher than most years.

Naomi Castro, a bank customer tells Eyewitness News, "It just really kind of bugs you out, because it makes you think you're not even safe to come use the ATM, even early in the morning."

For customers showing up just after the shooting -- that was the concern -- they avoid the ATM at night, but must remain incredibly vigilant during the day as well.
