HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Meadows Place officers took a man into custody Saturday morning.

Marla Carter reports on a Meadows Place police officer that was shot at

The man is accused of shooting at a police officer during a routine traffic stop on a green Pontiac Grand Prix in the 11600 block of Kirkwood.

The vehicle pulled to the right and came to a stop on S. Kirkwood near Belfort Avenue at 1:45am.

Investigators say the passenger opened his door and fired a shot back towards the officer's car.

The officer was still in the car at the time and was not hurt.

The officer did not return fire.

Investigators say the suspect then took off on foot, running through an apartment complex.

Police say while the suspect was running from the officer he dropped narcotics, contraband and the weapon.

The driver, 22-year-old Rontrell Da Loudres, was taken into custody and charged with possession of marijuana.

Da Loudres' mother said her son obeyed the law by not fleeing.

"My son was sitting in his car did not run from the scene, did not flee. He sat there and waited like he was taught, like he's supposed to and sat in the car," said Danielle Ishup-Pipkins, the driver's mother.

"I hope they do the right thing. They say they're taking him down for questioning. I guess they're question him about the person that did jump out and fled. I can't tell you anything about that guy. I wasn't in that car. I don't know who it was. I haven't talked to my son to know who it was," said Ishup-Pipkins.

No word at this time why the suspect shot at the officer.
