Suspect accused of dumping body in ditch appears in court
FORT BEND COUNTY (KTRK) -- The suspect accused of murdering a man found in a Katy area drainage ditch appeared in court Wednesday morning for the first time. Walter Alfaro was arrested by the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office on Sunday.
Alfaro, 28, said little coming out of Harris County Court as he faced murder charges. Last week, the body of 31-year-old Omar Borrego-Casanova was found in a drainage ditch on West Little York near Highway 6 in Katy.
"Being charged with murder he's very emotional about that," his attorney Wilvin Carter said. "He's upset that the facts told to the court and community that's not the entire story."
Prosecutors allege the defendant was "striking the complainant with a deadly weapon, namely his hand" and "kicking the complainant with a deadly weapon, namely his foot." Investigators found a secondary scene with a broken watch, necklace and blood trail and took them all in as potential evidence. Alfaro's attorney says the facts will show his client was defending himself.
According to charging documents, the victim was living with a couple and the suspect works for the couple's landlord. He was at the home to replace the oven when they all began drinking leading up to the crime.
"He did not know the victim. He was doing some work for a landlord that he works for. He was there that night to replace a stove for the victim and victim's family," Carter said. "Later on you'll learn and the facts will show my client was actually the one being accosted and as a result the deceased met his demise."
The incident was captured on surveillance video in the neighborhood near where the victim was found. Prosecutors say the two men pulled up to a house and are seen arguing before the defendant allegedly beat the victim. The video has not been released.
Alfaro is out on $50,000 bond. His next court date is in March.
