SOUTH HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) -- The City of South Houston Councilman Eddie Torres was arrested Friday night on suspicion of drunken driving, the city's police chief said.

It happened on Friday night around 11pm. An officer with the South Houston Police Department saw a white Chevrolet Camaro driving eastbound in the 1400 block of College Ave in the City of South Houston at a high rate of speed.

The officer pulled over the driver. The driver identified as, Eriberto Torres a city councilman of South Houston, exited the car and the officer gave him commands to get back in his vehicle and Torres refused. The officer then noticed Torres had red blood shot eyes, slurred speech, and a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath.

The officer then called for another officer who was a certified DWI unit for the South Houston Police Department. Officers attempted to perform DWI testing on the scene and Torres refused.

He was then placed into custody and transported to South Houston Police Jail for processing and Torres again refused all testing. Officer then contacted the Harris County DA's office and obtained a warrant for a blood specimen.

Torres was then transported to Memorial Herman Bayshore Hospital for the blood draw. Afterwards, the councilman was transported back to South Houston Jail.

Torres received a $500.00 bond and was then transported and booked into Harris County Jail.
