Retired HCSO deputy drowns during fishing trip in East Texas lake

NAVASOTA,TX (KTRK) -- A retired sheriff's deputy drowned after falling off a boat during a fishing trip on an east Texas lake, according to the Grimes County Sheriff's Office.

It happened Saturday morning near the Yarborough Lake Fishing Club not far from Navasota.

The victim was identified as 65-year-old Donald Ray McBroom of Tomball.

The Grime County Sheriff's Office says the retired Harris County deputy was returning to the pier at the lake's fishing club to retrieve some equipment and tried to step out of the boat before it was secured. McBroom missed the landing and fell into the water.

McBroom was declared dead at the scene.
