HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The body of a man who evaded police by jumping into a river from an overpass has been recovered in north Houston.

Police say the man fled the scene of a hit-and-run accident in the Humble area before his car stalled on the Eastex Freeway. As officers closed in on the suspect, he jumped into the San Jacinto River from an overpass.

An officer saw the man come up for air once before going back under the water. He was not seen again.

A police helicopter and police boats were called in to join the search before his body was discovered in the river.
