CHANNELVIEW, TX (KTRK) -- A man is dead after he was hit by a car outside a taco stand in Channelview last night.

Harris County authorities say Jose Julian Patino, 27, was drunk when he ran his Ford Taurus into Jose Garcia-Chavez around 12:00am in the 15000 block of East Freeway.

Patino, authorities say, pinned Garcia-Chavez between the car, the table he had been sitting at, and the taco stand.

Officials say Patino backed the vehicle off of Garcia-Chavez and continued in reverse. Some witnesses, authorities say, believed that move indicated Patino was intending to flee the scene.

Authorities say Patino then struck the building with the back right of his car and the people in the parking lot were able to prevent him from fleeing the scene until law enforcement arrived.

Garcia-Chavez died on the scene.

Patino was treated Bayshore Medical Center for injuries sustained after the crash.

Patino, who is not a U.S. citizen, is in jail, charged with intoxication manslaughter. His bond is $80,000. His next court date is set for November 24.
