Hurricane Rita baby turns 10 years old

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Monday marks the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Rita, and for one family, September 2005 is memorable for more than one reason.

While Hurricane Rita was threatening the coast, the Bertsch family was preparing for the arrival of their second baby. The little girl was born the day before Rita arrived. The storm was heading right for their area, causing the hospital to evacuate and forcing the family into hours of traffic with a newborn baby.

Now little Ava is 10 and the family views the ordeal as positive.

"What are the chances of almost being born in a hurricane. I kind of feel special about it," Ava Bertsch said.

The family now lives in Minnesota and loves having a remarkable story to tell.
