HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Homicide investigators say three people gunned down a man inside a west Houston condo as the victim's family slept.

The shooting happened around 6am Sunday on Country Place Drive at Memorial Drive, near Dairy Ashford.

Detectives say three suspects stormed into the condo, pistol-whipped the victim and ransacked the home.

The victim was shot once during a struggle with one of the suspects. He was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he died.

Investigators say the victim's wife and children were home at the time, but they weren't injured. The children slept through the ordeal.

Police say the suspects made off with took "some items," but they wouldn't offer any specifics.

The victim's stolen SUV was found a mile away from the condo.

A neighbor tells Eyewitness News that the victim was allegedly running an illegal gambling operation out of his home.
